understand の使い方

understand は「理解する」「分かる」などの意味がある動詞です。

他動詞と自動詞の使い方があります。

他動詞では、名詞（代名詞を含みます）、wh/how節・句、that節を目的語にとります。

to 不定詞は目的語にとりません。

understand 名詞：～を理解する

I cannot understand the meaning of the sentence.
（文の意味が理解できない。）

We should start from understanding the issue we face.
（私たちは直面している問題を理解することから始めるべきだ。）

cf. Can we say that AI can understand?　[この understand は自動詞]
（AIは理解できると言えるのだろうか？）

understand wh/how ~: なにが / なぜ /どのように / etc. ～ か を理解する

Did you understand what the teacher said?
（先生の言ったことは分かりましたか？）

I don’t understand why the accident occurred.
（なぜ事故が起きたのか分からない。）

I understand how you feel.
（あなたの気持ちは分かります。）

She understands what to do in an emergency.
（彼女は緊急時に何をすべきかを理解している。）

understand + wh/how 節・句　の文型です。

understand that ~: ～であることを理解している

I understand that we need more money for the project.
（そのプロジェクトにはもっとお金が必要だということは理解している。）

He doesn’t seem to understand that the task is not easy.
（彼はその仕事が簡単ではないことを理解していないようだ。）

I understand that you have passed the test.
（試験に受かったそうですね。）

that は省略することもできます。
